TOEFL Information for WAMS Advisors
Overview
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test that measures the English proficiency of non-native speakers, primarily for university admissions. It’s accepted by over 11,000 universities in 190+ countries and is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) is the most common format, taking just under 2 hours to complete.
Test Structure
The TOEFL iBT consists of four sections:
- Reading: 35 minutes, 2 passages (700 words each), 10 questions per passage.
- Listening: 36 minutes, 3 lectures (6 questions each) and 2 conversations (5 questions each).
- Speaking: 16 minutes, 4 tasks (1 independent, 3 integrated with listening/reading).
- Writing: 29 minutes, 2 tasks (1 integrated, 1 academic discussion).
Total score ranges from 0 to 120 (0-30 per section). A score of 100+ is often considered competitive for U.S. universities.
Key Information for Advisors
Registration: Students can register via their ETS account online or by phone. They must ensure their name and date of birth match their ID exactly, or they won’t be allowed to test. Advisors should recommend booking 2-3 months before application deadlines to allow time for score reporting or retesting.
Testing Options: Available at test centers or at home (TOEFL iBT Home Edition) with a virtual proctor.
Cost and Rescheduling: Fees vary by location; rescheduling or cancellation fees may apply. Check the TOEFL contact center for local details.
Preparation Resources
Encourage students to use official ETS resources:
- TOEFL TestReady: A personalized prep portal with practice tests, progress tracking, and feedback.
- Free Sample Test: A 40-minute self-paced test covering all sections.
- Practice Books: Official guides and TOEFL Practice Online (TPO) volumes with full mock tests.
- Courses: A free 6-week interactive course or an 8-week study plan with skill-building activities.
Advisors can also recommend Preply tutors trained in TOEFL academic English.
Advisor Tips
- Assess students’ English levels using free ETS practice materials to determine readiness.
- Highlight that TOEFL is preferred by many U.S. universities, but confirm specific requirements with each institution.
- For speaking, note that TOEFL uses recorded responses via microphone, which may suit students nervous about face-to-face interviews.
